1700 Zulu
Cockpit Recording Policy
1. About this Policy
1700 Zulu Debrief is operated by 1700 Zulu Technologies LLC under the 1700 Zulu brand.
This Policy explains how cockpit recordings are collected, used, stored, accessed and processed through 1700 Zulu Debrief.
2. Purpose
1700 Zulu Debrief provides pilots, student pilots and flight instructors with tools to record, reconstruct and review training flights.
Cockpit recordings are intended primarily for legitimate flight-training, personal review and instructor/student debriefing purposes.
3. Consent
The required student and instructor consent must be obtained before cockpit audio recording begins through 1700 Zulu Debrief.
Consent is obtained for each recorded flight or recording session.
If a required participant declines, cockpit audio recording through 1700 Zulu Debrief must not commence.
1700 Zulu Debrief may maintain an electronic record showing that consent was provided.
4. What May Be Recorded
Depending on the aircraft and connected equipment, recordings may contain:
- student speech;
- instructor speech;
- intercom communications;
- ATC transmissions;
- aviation radio transmissions;
- transmissions from other aircraft or stations;
- aircraft warnings and audio alerts; and
- incidental cockpit background audio.
5. Flight Tracking
A recorded flight may also contain:
- precise GPS coordinates;
- flight track;
- altitude;
- groundspeed;
- heading or course;
- timestamps;
- flight phases;
- departure and arrival locations;
- aircraft details;
- device sensor information;
- training events; and
- tags or markers.
6. Recording Period
Recording and flight tracking should operate only during the intended flight or training session.
Participants should end the recording when the intended recording session has concluded.
1700 Zulu Debrief is not intended to continuously track users outside active flight recording or another location-enabled feature deliberately activated by the user.
7. Private Access
Identifiable cockpit recordings are private by default. Access is ordinarily restricted to:
- the student associated with the flight; and
- the instructor associated with the flight.
8. Technology Providers
Authorised technology providers may process information where required to operate 1700 Zulu Debrief. Current providers include:
- Google Firebase;
- Railway;
- Vercel; and
- DeepSeek.
9. Artificial Intelligence
1700 Zulu Debrief may use artificial intelligence and automated systems to assist with:
- transcription;
- speaker separation or identification;
- flight-phase identification;
- training-event identification;
- creation of tags;
- voice-triggered location tagging;
- summaries; and
- post-flight debriefing.
10. ATC and Radio Communications
Radio communications captured incidentally or deliberately through an aircraft audio system may form part of a private flight recording.
Access to a recording through 1700 Zulu Debrief does not itself grant a user permission to independently publish, broadcast or redistribute captured communications.
Users are responsible for complying with applicable laws before publishing or otherwise distributing recordings.
11. Publication and Redistribution
1700 Zulu Debrief is not designed as a public cockpit-audio publishing service. Users must not assume that access to a recording provides an unrestricted right to:
- publish the recording;
- broadcast it;
- upload it publicly;
- provide it to unrelated third parties;
- commercially exploit another person's voice; or
- publicly redistribute captured communications.
12. Deletion
Where deletion functionality is available, authorised users may request or initiate deletion of eligible flight information. This may include:
- audio;
- GPS track;
- telemetry;
- transcript;
- tags;
- notes; and
- AI-generated debrief information.
13. Aviation Safety
Recording must never interfere with safe aircraft operation.
Users must not manipulate 1700 Zulu Debrief where doing so would create an unsafe distraction.
The pilot in command remains responsible for the safe operation of the aircraft.
14. Not an Official Flight Recorder
1700 Zulu Debrief is a training and debriefing product. Unless expressly stated otherwise, it is not:
- an approved cockpit voice recorder;
- an approved flight data recorder;
- an approved navigation source;
- a primary flight instrument;
- an official ATC recording system; or
- a substitute for legally required aircraft equipment.
15. Unrelated Private Conversations
Users must not intentionally use 1700 Zulu Debrief to covertly record unrelated private conversations.
Recording should begin and end as close as reasonably practical to the intended flight or training session.
